one of las smartest young voices says the la times…which the artist suspects, may just be a covert way of saying la is dumb. “open” mike eagle wouldnt terribly mind, being born and raised in chicago where the painful winters and his uppity grandparents kept him inside as a youth. he spent his formative years watching alternative music happen on mtv and hoping to one day be able to audition for the native tongues. as a young adult after graduating with a degree in psychology, he did the next best thing and moved to los angeles, joining the project blowed collective where he made music and toured with busdriver, aceyalone, abstract, nocando, and more. he has also gained notoriety in the world of comedy by being invited by professional funny people (paul f. tompkins, hannibal buress, matt besser/ucb) to rap at their shows. he would like to be raps kurt vonnegut but recognizes that he would first have to create something as iconic as the four-stroke illustration of an anus. he practices by releasing rap albums that delight, entertain, and confuse.

after few nolder, italian fellow lehar aka lorenzo esposito is the second new signing for connaisseur this year. apart from his residency at the cirq club in venice and regular bookings at some of the best clubs and parties in italy and malta, lehar truly is a very talented producer as well. some of you might have heard the free download for lehars remix of kollektiv turmstrasses classic *tristesse* which has caused some attention on him the past weeks and was therefore the perfect precursor for this release. his demo impressed us very much and both titles really hit our taste. and as though this wasn t enough, together with his demo he delivered a remix by his friend and probably hottest producer of the moment: mario basanov, head of the label boso and mostly know under his moniker ten walls.

very welcome reissue of the 12 inch vinyl version of the superb *onda* from brazilian soul legend cassiano. one of the founding fathers of the scene, a contemporary of and collaborator with people such as tim maia, hyldon, etc., cassiano only released a handful of lps and singles but the quality made up for the quantity and this 1977 polydor 12- features two of his best moments. side as *onda* is a lilting sun-drenched slice of pure soul heaven with a grooving b-line and sweet vocals that at nearly 8 minutes is still not enough - a truly captivating mellow masterpiece that you want to last forever... the flip side is no less accomplished - an upfront bass-heavy funk jam guaranteed to whip the dancefloor into a frenzy. essential!

nathan fake and wesley matsell are both producers best known for their releases on border community - nathan fake has been putting out psychedelic permutations on dance music since 2003 for the label, while matsell recently released the blissful total order of being ep for them earlier in 2014. cambria instruments is a new label venture from the pair, and for the first release they have teamed up for a split 12- of kaleidoscopic electronic sounds. nathan fake s contribution black drift starts things off, an initially inauspicious tripping beat gathering momentum and morphing into a far-out piece of fuzzy house underpinned by sunken low-end rumbles. it s the kind of brilliantly wide-eyed track we have come to expect from the producer. over on the flip, wesley matsell s bismuth is a more shadowy, moody affair, a tight techno rhythm holding things together while synths spin wildly. a highly expressive, lysergic trip and one of his finest productions to date. all in all, you couldn t hope for a stronger start from a new label.

released in 1988, tougher than leather was the culmination of the rap/rock road that run-dmc travelled in since their earlier albums king of rock movlp675 and raising hell movlp633. its superb production, booming 808 beats combined with guitar samples, catchy choruses and smart rhymes made tougher than leather undoubtedly the best hip hop record that came out in 1988. great tracks include *mary, mary*, *runs house* and *i m not going out like that*. its equal appeal to hip hop as well as rock fans made the album a million seller, and underlined run-dmcs stature as living hip hop legends all over the world.

usually found in partnership with blocks on their own narratives imprint, here we find escher flying solo with two beautifully contrasting compositions. deep architecture has already been causing a big stir online due to its wild time signature and off-beat percussive patterns. physically its drum & bass, but mentally its most definitely techno as it pummels with loopy drum insistency. spirit bounce, meanwhile, is a stark and breezy stepper that oozes space and shimmers with emotive synths. its a simple but soulful synthesis many have attempted over the year but only few have mastered... klute, marcus intalex and now escher, too. the return of 31 has been one of d&bs best stories so far this year.

to rack & ruin comes thundering your way slap bang in time for summer courtesy of our italian disco brother in arms dj rocca and his compardre n2b. the usual high standard of sounds are as present as ever on the 6th instalment of our edits and reworks imprint. get up hits you with a rolling bassline that brims with plenty of pant flapping groove & wah wah guitar licks before that ever so familiar vocal kicks in for a full on reggae disco workout. weird safari certainly lives up to its name - a stripped back, dark & almost techno sound, alongside tinkering percussion and spaced out wild animal noises surely make for a weird safari. dubby pino has you from the off, all the foot stamping & money shaking elements are present - hooky guitar, fat bass loop, infectious percussion, soulful vocal licks and a gorgeous little piano break. mr rossi’s backpain starts off by getting the award for the best song title we’ve ever had on rack & ruin, but as well as that it’s in the proper groovy dance floor tackle category with a bassline & guitar that commands your respect and then when the 4/4 kicks in at 1 min, well just have a listen.

classic is incredibly pleased to announce that a certain man of the moment has joined the classic family. *one* was brought to the attention of classic when it featured on vinyl only release late last year. ears pricked up and more information was sought. who was this man from nowhere - producing music that was modern yet soulful, funky - and best of all coupled with his own vocal talents. luke solomon then championed not only *one*, but the general excitement surrounding something that ticked all of his boxes. reminiscent of the old classic sound that reminded him of iz and diz, losoul and the like… seven was approached and not only offered classic *one* to re-release, but two brand new cuts featured exclusively here. an ep aptly entitled *friends* is the freshest thing that has been around for some time - and classic are proud to welcome seven into their ever expanding family.
